The 12th Hartley Lifecare Ability Cycle Challenge was held from Friday 25 to Monday 28 November 2011 with 320 participants including cyclists, volunteers and support crew taking on the challenge of completing the arduous 450km ride from Canberra to Mt Kosciusko and return. The Challenge is a team event with the ride being the culmination of months of fundraising for disability services in Canberra.
The ride featured teams riding in bunch formation and was run across two stages with Stage One leaving Canberra’s Boomanulla Oval on Friday and returning from Jindabyne on Sunday with Stage Two departing Boomanulla on Saturday and returning to Canberra on Monday.
The 2011 Hartley Challenge was the 4th consecutive year that Rork's Designer, Jorge Cerro has participated in, with Jorge's team of 12 riders, "The Allstars" heading off on the Saturday (Stage 2). Of the overall experience, Jorge share's the following insights:
"This year, the 1st day to Jindabyne was wet to say the least due to the non stop rain for the first 60kms or so, plus the 12 punctures the group shared between us all - they are a welcome break but 12 was ridiculous!
The second day from Jindabyne to the top of Mt Kociusko was very windy and proved too difficult for some riders who opted to stop 8kms short from the top and get some hot soup into them (myself included).
We did the return trip home on the 3rd day in record time - it was smooth sailing all the way back with only 1 puncture to mention, just 4kms from the end."
